1. Who is Giganews? Doesn't IO have its own news service?

Giganews provides a wholesale news service for ISPs. We have always run our own news service, but the tremendous growth of Usenet volume has made that service extremely difficult and costly to maintain. Giganews is a local company that does news. They have extremely large, multiprocessor Sun systems and offer a superior service. We made this choice to provide a faster and more complete news service for our customers.

2. How do I access the Giganews service?

Most IO customers will not need to change a single thing. If you experience any problems, check that your newsreader is set to "news.io.com." If you connect to Illuminati Online using a modem or ISDN, or if you telnet to io.com and read news from one of our userhosts, you will not need a username and password.

3. How do I access news remotely?

If you have a RoadRunner account or similar service, or normally telnet to io.com but prefer to use a browser-based newsreader, set your news server to "news.io.com," and set your newsreader to "remote authentication." You will be asked for a username. Use your email address, NOT just your IO username: i.e. "fnord@io.com". Use your normal IO password.

4. How do I request a new newsgroup?

Send e-mail to admin@io.com or post your request to the io.admin newsgroup and we will request that newsgroup for you.

5. Can we increase/decrease expire times on certain groups?

No. We have no direct control over expiration times.

6. Does the server accept cancels?

No. Cancels are too easily forged, so Giganews chooses to ignore all cancel messages.

7. Will my posts be filtered in any way?

Giganews only filters for excessive cross-posting (ECP) of articles. The ECP filter is set to five, so if an article is posted to five or more groups, ALL posts will be discarded.

8. Where can I find more information about Giganews?

Giganews maintains a Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) file at http://www.giganews.com/info/giganfaq.html

Help on setting up remote news authentication can be found at http://www.io.com/help/newsauth.html.
